Welcome to the web site of Laurence Oxley Ltd, 17, Broad St, Alresford, Hampshire. The bookshop was founded in 1950, and initially sold antiques. Now, our business is to do with:-

  • New and second-hand books, including rare and collectable books:
  • Pictures, particularly watercolours of the 19th Century.  Our special interest is the work of the Surrey artist, born near Newcastle, Birket Foster (1825-1899).
  • Picture framing, done on the premises. We also offer picture cleaning and restoration.
  • Old and rare maps.  We keep a large range of fascinaing old maps of the counties and abroad.  Please see Maps page or telephone us with any requests. 01962 732998.
  • Fused glass panels and bowls, as seen on Grand Designs and in our new gallery. The deeply coloured designs can be easily hung anywhere in the house, but are particularly effective in the kitchen, bathroom and above swimming pools.  Each is made by an artist, fused at 860 degrees c and signed; no two panels are identical, and the uneven front surface makes them interesting to touch.

Due to our long association with the work of the 19th Century British artist Birket Foster, and our consultancy work on the subject of Birket Foster with the London auction houses, we get requests from around the world to authenticate Birket Foster paintings.

We are located in New Alresford, Hampshire, an attractive town with interesting buildings and shops. The Watercress Line Steam Railway operates from here to Alton.

Please try us for picture framing; whilst much of our business comes locallly, we have loyal customers from further afield, from within Hampshire, the nearest city being Winchester, also from neighbouring counties of Sussex, Dorset, Wiltshire and Surrey.
