MYLES BIRKET FOSTER, RWS, RAB (Berlin), (1825-1899). Birket Foster, who became well-known for his pictures of children and landscapes in his life-time, had no formal art training. After first drawing for The Illustrated London News and Punch, he turned to illustrating books with delicate vignettes. In 1858, he dropped illustration for painting, mostly in watercolour. His tender treatment of many subjects, matched with an unparalleled technical ability, was admired by artists and the public. His unique work has always been expensive, and subsequently has usually been kept in good condition. We have framed to Museum Standard, with cotton board; Museum Glass is fitted to all the Birket Foster watercolours listed. Authenticity guaranteed.
If possible, kindly telephone in advance to view our selection. Prices, available upon request, start at £265, and go through all levels to £15,000. Please apply for prices not listed. |

BIRKET FOSTER, RWS, RAB (1825-1899)
Well at Hastings, 1873.
The idea for this typical genre picture probably came to Birket Foster whilst on a family holiday. The style is very much that of this period of Foster’s art, when he was carrying out his Venice commission. The detail is precise and the finish is heightened by a liberal use of Chinese White, both visible and beneath the colours, which has helped preserve the fine condition of the picture. The Well is still in existence, though the donkeys may have been modelled from a pair the Fosters kept in the grounds of ‘The Hill’, Witley, Surrey.
Exhibited: Royal Watercolour Society, Winter Exhibition, 1873;
Birket Foster Loan Exhibition, J & W Vokins, 1882 (lent by Mr. Rivière);

Illustrated: Engraved as a woodcut for The Graphic, 1882.
